As soon as Uju was born, her mother died! The fact that Uju was born blind without any eye on her head and that her mother died while giving birth to her made the villagers to start calling her a Witch. For Twelve years after Uju’s father married her step mother, she could not get pregnant. This made her worry and in order not to lose her marriage, she came up with a plan

She told her husband that Uju what the villagers said about Uju being a witch is true and that she dreamt that she was pregnant and Uju was killing all her children in the dream and that in the dream someone told her that if she wants to have children, she should be flogging Uju 50 times every day because that is the only way the evil spirit in her can be removed

Whenever Uju was beaten, she would go to their large backyard and sit down, then she would start singing and crying. Uju has a powerful voice that when she starts singing, the trees could not resist the melody as the trees and birds at the back of their house would start dancing as soon as she begin singing. But since she was blind, Uju did not know as she couldn’t see the trees and birds.

One day after Uju’s stepmother flogged her mercilessly, she used her stick as usual and found her way to the backyard, then she began singing. As soon as she began singing, the trees and the birds started dancing and vibing to her melody.

While she was still singing, Uju step mother began looking for her in the house and then traced her to the back of the house. But on getting to the back of the house, she was shocked to her bones. She saw Uju singing and the trees and birds dancing to her song!

Immediately she ran into the house in shock to call her husband. Honey come and see, I told you that your daughter is a witch and now she is manifesting it, she said as her husband stood up to go see for himself

On getting to the backyard, Uju father was shocked. So Uju is truly a witch, he said as he and his wife then took her to the king of the village

The king called a quick meeting at the village square and then banished Uju from the village. We don’t accept witches here, he said as he declared that she should be banish.
